FAQ

How To Use GizmoCall:

What do I need to use GizmoCall?
Internet connected computer with a browser and Flash version 9 or better. A headset is recommended for optimum call quality. Try experiencing a sample call, dial 1-800-555-8355 then speak a category or use the keypad to type the first 3 letters of a selection.

Who can I call?
You can call any other GizmoCall, Gizmo5 users, 800 numbers, or SIP address for no charge. Here's a guide to free calls you can make. To call a traditional phone number and take advantage of some of the low rates on the net you will need to buy $10 of call-out credit here.

Can GizmoCall receive calls?
You can receive calls using GizmoCall. Simply login and then any other GizmoCall user can call you at that username. As long as GizmoCall is open in any window or browser tab (even if in the background) you will be able to receive a call.

How can I make sure my speaker and microphone are working?
Click the "Test" icon below the numeric keypad and follow the instructions. Then use the microphone and speaker sliders to set the optimum settings.

Can I setup GizmoCall so that my CallerID displays my mobile, home, or work number when I place a call so they can identify who is calling?
Yes, you can configure your account to pass the correct CallerID number. There is a $4 charge to set this up and it can be done at the Gizmo5 Caller ID area here.

Is it possible to turn phone numbers on web pages into links which when clicked will automatically trigger a call via GizmoCall like this: 1-800-555-8355?
Visit the GizmoCall Firefox Add-ons page here, or install our Firefox Plugin right now which will automatically make any phone number on a web page clickable and place a call via GizmoCall. To Install, click on the link and choose 'Open with Firefox'. Alternatively, you can also download the file to your desktop and drag it into your Firefox browser.

OpenSky:

What is OpenSky?
OpenSky is a free service provided by Gizmo5 which allows any mobile phone, web browser or IP aware phone network (SIP, asterisk, etc) to communicate with Skype users. OpenSky supports sending text messages and voice calls.

How do I use OpenSky?
For more information on how to use OpenSky and setup aliases visit http://www.worldlife.ucoz.com

What is an alias?
An alias makes it easy to dial Skype addresses from your SIP device. Here's an example. Say you have someone on Skype at: JoeBob17 that you want to call. Obviously you can't dial "joebob17" from your telephone handset. So in the web interface users can define a number alias:

JoeBob17 = 1-333-444-1234

After this is setup in the web interface dialing 1-333-444-1234 will tell the server to connect the call to: http://www.worldlife.ucoz.com. You can setup your aliases at my.gizmo5.com after your OpenSky purchase.

OpenSky Tech Support:

Problem: I am placing an OpenSky call and it is not being connected.

Solution: If you are having problems placing an OpenSky call please do a test by going to GizmoCall.com and placing a call to the Skype echo line: skype_echo123 This will test basic functionality of your equipment and the system. If that works then replace echo123 with the Skypename you want to call. This will test whether your account can receive OpenSky calls.

Problem: I am calling a Skype account and they receive an instant message that the call is coming in but Skype never rings.

Solution: Make sure the Skype account you are calling has 'accept calls from anyone' in the privacy setting area.

Problem: I am dialing Skype_username or a 333 number but it is not being connected.

Solution: You must use Gizmo5 servers for skype_username to work or a 333 number. If you are using a different phone network you must ask the system administrator to configure their system so that skype_username and any 333 number is sent to OpenSky.

Problem: I use an Asterisk server for my network so how can I dial a Skype name?

Solution: You must dial the fully qualified address like this: http://www.worldlife.ucoz.com or ask you administrator to modify the server configuration to accept free Skype calls.

Troubleshooting:

I am not getting any audio when I make a call?
Older versions of Flash have issues with microphones. Please make sure you have the latest version of Flash. You can get this free download at http://www.worldlife.ucoz.com.

When I make a call the audio doesn't work.
To test your system, click the "Test" button below the numeric keypad. Listen to the announcement to see if audio is working correctly and then you will be given an opportunity to speak and hear your words echoed back to you. Use the sliders next to the Test button to adjust the speaker volume and the microphone input so callers will hear you.

Callers are complaining that my voice is faint or barely audible.
Use the microphone slider under the 7 key to optimize the mic level for your computer. Do a "Test" call to find the best audio settings for your computer.

There is an echo when I make a call.
Using a headset will remove the echo. If you don't have a headset turning down the volume will reduce the echo.

My microphone is not working, what can I do?
All the microphone detection is handled by Adobe's Flash software. To adjust the microphone settings, right click on the dialpad and select: Settings. Then select the microphone icon. Here you can adjust which mic input device flash is using and the sensitivity of the mic. Use the 'Test' button on the dialpad to place a call and get the optimum software settings and placement of the microphone.

Free Mobile Calls to Anywhere in the World

Mobile Skype Cable and comes from a Norwegian company called IPDrum (or will come when it ships in August). The cable connects a mobile phone to your computer. The illustrations all show one phone and one computer, but the power of the system can only be realized if you have at least two phones.

One phone stays at your PC as the interconnect with Skype. I’m hoping the cable also charges the phone, but that, again, isn’t made clear. In the simplest case you could probably pick up the phone and use it as a dedicated handset to speak over the Skype network. But the true power of the Mobile Skype Cable comes from having multiple phones and some kind of family billing plan.

I’m a Verizon mobile user and so is Mrs. Cringely. Our Verizon plan allows unlimited calls between our two phones. Now imagine one of those phones (or a third, they cost $9.99 per month each here in Charleston) is attached to a PC back at our house. By calling that phone and using the IPDrum software that ships with the Mobile Skype Cable, I can be linked directly to Skype where I can dial a second call over the computer network. Since the mobile call is free and the Skype call is free, suddenly I can make unlimited mobile calls anywhere in the world. Even more powerful, by linking my Skype and mobile numbers through the IPDrum software, any Skype user anywhere in the world can call me for free.

But, of course, ipDrum is just software and it’s not magic. You could imagine other software that connects a cell phone by your PC to your Vonage account as well as your Skype account, for example. Scott Lemon’s been working to use a cell phone with an unlimited SMS messaging account as a way for a PC to send SMS messages. Walled gardens have weak walls anymore.
